The 5% Lugol liquid solution is an aqueous solution of pure iodine in potassium iodide. Developed by Jean Lugol in 1829, it is an example of a solution obtained by solubilization. Elemental iodine is very difficult to dissolve in water, but thanks to the presence of potassium iodide, which acts as the solubilizer in this system, it is possible to obtain an iodine solution at the desired concentration (in practice 1%, 2%, or 5%). The Lugol fluid solution with a 5% concentration is a mark of quality.
