Pterostilbene is a version of the resveratrol molecule, slightly modified by nature by exchanging two minor chemical substituents. However, this minor substitution allows pterostilbene to be absorbed 4 times better than resveratrol when administered orally, making it much more effective than resveratrol. This is why pterostilbene has been called "more powerful resveratrol." Some authors, however, note that the effects of the two nutrients do not entirely overlap, so such a view is not fully justified.

Extensive research has been conducted on isolated cells, animal research models, and volunteers, confirming the extremely broad properties of resveratrol and pterostilbene.

Pterostilbene and resveratrol are both stilbenoid compounds with closely related structures, which give them similar functions. Both compounds work together to activate the "longevity gene SIRT1."
