Liposomes are structures that spontaneously form from phospholipids. They are shaped like bubbles (0.01-1 micrometers in size) filled with water (or an aqueous solution), surrounded by a lipid bilayer about 5 nanometers thick, hence their name phospholipid vesicles. Their envelope is similar to biological membranes. Phospholipid vesicles are biocompatible (made of the same components as the cell membranes in our body) and small enough to penetrate blood vessel walls. Liposomes have the ability to transport both water and fatty substances, making them an ideal transport system for substances needed by the cells of our body.
